Wisconsin’s secretary of agriculture and state veterinarian are in China discussing dairy products and production at the China World Dairy Expo and Summit.
Wisconsin trade missions to China are fairly common, but this one is big: 34 staff and private business people are there to promote products and dairy practices. Ann Marie Ames is a spokeswoman for the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. She said the demand for dairy in China is increasing.
“It hasn’t been a large part of the chinese diet, especially in the larger urban culture but the government has been pushing for children to be drinking milk as a source of protein and calcium,” Ames said.

China is Wisconsin’s third-largest foreign trading partner, after Canada and Mexico. The state sent $278 million worth of goods to China last year, including hides, whey, lumber and ginseng.
