As Spearfishing Winds Down, DNR Bag Limits Go Up

By

Anglers may need a bigger creel this weekend: The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) increased bag limits on 400 northern lakes.

Tribal spearfishing is winding down, and they’ve had the lowest walleye harvest in five years. Because of that, the DNR is raising bag limits starting Saturday. Shirley Morey of Junek’s Log Cabins on Lake Namakagon says that will help business.

“When people can make a decision to stay in your area or make a decision to go where they can fish more amounts of fish, yeah. It’ll make people a lot happier and willing to come back next year.”

Bag limits will increase to five on 289 lakes, to three walleye for the stringer on 131 lakes.

That makes Lac Courte Oreilles’s Angler’s Haven Resort co-owner Bruce Wick a happy fellow.

“Well, it’s great. It’ll be very positive for our cabin guests. Well, just all around. It will be nice to have it up there again.”

The late ice-out hurt spearfishing. Six Ojibwe bands harvested 28,000 walleye this spring, the fewest since 2008.
