Telephone Regulation Bill; Skills Gap Bill

Featured in this Show

  • Telephone Regulation Bill

Two years ago, the Wisconsin Legislature deregulated the telecommunication industry. Now in part because of concerns about what’s happening on the east coast in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, state Senator Kathleen Vinehout (D-Alma) is introducing a bill that would force telephone companies to maintain existing land phone lines. We also talk with people from Verizon and Centurylink about the issue.

  • Skills Gap Bill

A Wisconsin Senate Committee held a public hearing recently about a bill designed to reduce a skills gap of the state’s workforce. The bill would provide a $10 million dollar competitive grant program through the state’s technical colleges to businesses, or economic development agencies could use to help fund local skilled worker training needs. State Representative Steve Doyle (D-Onalaska) is a co-sponsor of the legislation in the Assembly and speaks to the issue.
