  • Study: Teen Birth Rates Are On Decline In Wisconsin, Across Nation

A new study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that the teen birth rate is at an all-time low in the U.S., with Wisconsin seeing some of the biggest declines in the past decade.

Contributing to those declines is the focus of Nicole Angresano, vice president of community impact for the United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County and who leads the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative. She said these drops are because young people have better access to information and health care.

“What we’re seeing now is that young people who have been given access to evidenced-based information, who have been given opportunities to have improved health care access, are really making better choices,” she said.

She said it’s also because young people are delaying sexual intercourse until they are older and those young people who are sexually active are using contraception.

While the birth rate has dropped nationally by 40 percent, the teen birth rate in Milwaukee has dropped 54 percent over the past decade. This is something that Angresano attributes to the community partnerships between business and faith leaders, community and school educators, parents and teens themselves.

“By appealing to people where they were, by framing this issue in a way where we could talk about it differently with different audiences, we made room for everyone to contribute. And I think that’s often missing,” she said.

She said talking about issues such as teen sexual activity can be particularly controversial and require thoughtful and careful participation from everyone.
