Wisconsin is famous for its summer arts and music festivals.

But there’s a lot more happening than just the big festivals, like Milwaukee’s Summerfest and Justin Vernon’s Eaux Claires festival.

There are a lot of hidden gems in Wisconsin, said George Tzougros, executive director of the Wisconsin Arts Board.

The board provides grants, information and technical assistance to Wisconsin artists, among other things.

Tzougros’ favorite example of a tiny place with a booming arts scene is Stockholm, Wisconsin.

“We’re talking about a population between 66 and 99 people — the last time I saw the sign it was 99 people. Small place. But people are coming over the border from Minnesota to see what’s going on,” Tzougros said.

Stockholm has a performing arts center and an art fair.

“From the smallest community to the largest ones, there’s something going on right nearby you,” Tzougros said.

Other festivals and fairs happening throughout the state include Fond du Lac’s Art on the Island, Horicon’s Jersey Street Music Festival, Burlington’s Jaycees Arts & Crafts Fair and Chocolate Fest, Richfield’s Art at the Mill, Almond’s Tater Toot, and much more.

Tzougros said he “couldn’t even begin to count” how many festivals and fairs there are throughout the state.

“These are not confined to concert halls or museums,” he said.

Local nonprofit arts organizations in Wisconsin generate about $535 million annually, according to the Wisconsin Arts Board.
