  • 5 Things To Do In Milwaukee (That Aren't A Brewers Game)

In her new book, “100 Things To Do in Milwaukee Before You Die,” Jennifer Posh, a copy editor at VISIT Milwaukee, offers visitors a bucket list of activities in a city that offers much more than beer, brats and cheese.

“I think there’s just such a wide variety of things to do here in Milwaukee,” said Posh Tuesday. “I’m kind of a younger professional, but I used to love coming down here as a kid when I was coming on school field trips. And there’s so much for families to do, and really people of all ages.”

Posh, who grew up in the Milwaukee area and now lives in the Bay View neighborhood, provides an insider’s look at the city by the lake. She breaks down her book into five categories of activities: food and drink; music and entertainment; sports and recreation; culture and history; and shopping and fashion.

Here’s one recommendation from each of Posh’s categories:

“Sip a Drink at Milwaukee’s Oldest Cocktail Lounge”

Founded in 1938, Bryant’s is Milwaukee’s oldest cocktail lounge and offers more than 500 Depression-era drinks. There’s no menu — instead, bartenders guide patrons by their taste preferences. Ice cream drinks are a staple at the lounge, and it’s not uncommon to see tumblers served on fire. Esquire named Bryant’s one of America’s best bars in 2012.

    “Learn About an American Icon”

The Harley-Davidson Motor Company Museum was founded in Milwaukee in 1903 and still calls the city its home. Located in the Menomonee Valley and considered a catalyst for redevelopment in the former industrial corridor, the museum features interactives and changing exhibits throughout the year.

    Kayak Through the City”

Kayak rentals are available to paddle through one of Milwaukee’s three rivers, all of which open up into Lake Michigan. “You can actually kayak up the Milwaukee River, that cuts right through the city, and see all of the buildings from the river. It was just such a fun and new way to see the city,” said Posh.

    Tour the Basilica”

The Basilica of St. Josaphat dominates the city’s south side skyline. Milwaukee’s largest church features Polish-style architecture and salvaged materials from a Chicago post office that was demolished at the turn of the century. In 1929, it became just the third basilica in the U.S., a moniker reserved for churches with historical importance. Formal tours are available after Sunday church services.

    Pick out a Dashing Hat”

The Brass Rooster has been helping men and women look their best with their handmade hats of all styles. Celebrities and musicians have stopped in the Bay View shop over the years to place custom orders, including Kid Rock.
