For two decades, cellulosic ethanol -- a product made from crop residues or feedstock like switchgrass -- has been hailed as the next big thing in renewable alternatives for transportation fuel.
However, commercial scale development has been hindered by financial, technical and environmental challenges. While many remain skeptical about the future of renewable transportation fuel, Bruce Barcott, an environmental journalist and contributing editor for OnEarth Magazine, said he's hopeful.
