  • For Great Views Of Fall Colors, Editor Says To Visit Mississippi River

Enjoying fall colors is a popular activity at this time of year, and the Upper Mississippi River provides many opportunities to enjoy autumn’s palette.

Reggie McLeod is the editor and publisher of Big River magazine, which encourages people to “explore the Mississippi from the Twin Cities to the Quad Cities.” McLeod said that the many bluffs along the river offer wonderful vantage points to see the trees in their autumn glory.

“They’re 400 to 500 feet high, and from some of them you can see a 30- or 40-mile stretch of the river,” he said. “It’s just stunning this time of year.”

The location of those overlooks is easy to determine by using the interactive Big River Travel Map available on the magazine’s website. McLeod said that the blue markers on that map denote nearly 50 overlooks on the Upper Mississippi. He added that the overlooks vary in how easy they are to access, and that there are options for travelers looking for a bit of a hike as part of their outing.

He said that the hike to the overlooks can be just as stunning.

“Going through the woods up to those bluffs, you’re in such a variety of different tree species and different colors,” he said. “Even the smells are just overwhelming sometimes.”

For more active people McLeod recommended:

For those wanting or needing a less strenuous excursion, McLeod said that visitors can drive right up to the overlook at these locations:
