On Thursday, December 4th at 10 am, Wisconsin Public Radio’s Route 51 focuses on local efforts to remove and defuse unexploded bombs in the country of Laos, left over from the Vietnam War. Host Glen Moberg welcomes Jim Harris, the founder of We Help War Victims, who spends several months in Laos every year coordinating a bomb removal crew made up of the country’s native Hmong population. Harris retired as the principal of Weston Elementary School so he could devote his life to the humanitarian mission, after learning about the problem from the extended families of his Hmong students. He will be joined by Peter Yang, Chief Operating Officer of the Wausau Area Hmong Mutual Association, and June Berg, Learning Center Coordinator of the Highground Veterans Memorial Park in Neillsville. The Highground is currently featuring an exhibit profiling Harris’s work.
