Being ready physically for a bike ride is just as important as being mentally prepared, and there are important rules to know before hitting the road, according to a Madison bicycling advocate.

Arthur Ross, the pedestrian-bicycle coordinator of the Bike Madison Program, said he advises bikers to thoroughly check out their bike before riding it for the first time this season. He said it’s important to look at the tires’ air pressure, that the brakes and derailleur shifters are working and that the cables are in good condition.

Once the bike’s body has been examined, he said bicyclists should hydrate themselves the day before going on a ride.

“Hydration is really critical. I find my hardest rides are on days I just didn’t hydrate properly ahead of time,” said Ross.

In terms of being mentally prepared, Ross shares a couple of important notes to remember for the biking season. If there had been any confusion about who has the right-of-way between bicyclists and pedestrians, he said pedestrians always win.

“The bicyclists need to yield to the pedestrian. We want the faster users to yield to the slower users. That’s the law and what we promote,” said Ross, concerning the Wisconsin state cycling laws.

Additionally, he mentioned that one of the most important things to do to stay safe is just be aware. Constantly looking around can prevent a lot of problems, he said.

Listening also can be a way to stay safe especially when bikers want to pass pedestrians or other cyclists. He said using a bell or saying “excuse me” are simple but easy ways to avoid accidents.

“It’s all about communication and how communication can make the situation safer,” said Ross.
