April 17, 2014: Wausau’s Holtz-Krause Landfill

Air Date:
Heard On Route 51

We take a look at the policy and politics behind Wisconsin’s first successful reclamation of a licensed, municipal landfill. Last month, the Wisconsin DNR sent the first ever Certificate of Completion to the partners involved in the clean-up of the Holtz-Krause Landfill in Wausau, paving the way for an athletic field complex on the site. The process involved a change in state law supported by both Democrats and Republicans that allowed the county to take ownership without being held liable for past environmental problems. Our guests will be Dave Eisenreich, chair of the Holtz-Krause Steering Committee; Mark Thimke, an environmental attorney with Foley and Lardner of Milwaukee, who worked on the project; and Brad Karger, Marathon County Administrator. The athletic fields will be located next to the new, world class Wausau Curling Center on the property.
