Thousands of people are expected to attend the state’s largest free meal on Christmas, made possible through the help of volunteers who say they’re concerned for the homeless, the working poor and the lonely.

The Salvation Army said it’s expecting up to 8,000 people at its annual Christmas Family Feast in Milwaukee. Michael Hall, who’s volunteering for his seventh year, said it’s troubling that so many people remain in need, but he said that at least they can share a meal.

“Nobody should be alone on Christmas,” said Hall. “I look at it as the coming together of many different types of people, many different types of ideas.”

Fifteen-year volunteer Brett Goodman said he’s Jewish, but likes to give back to his Christian friends on Christmas.

“I just think it’s the spirit of charity and giving and helping people out,” said Goodman.

The Salvation Army meal begins at 11 a.m. on Dec. 25 at the Wisconsin Center in downtown Milwaukee.
