Democrat Russ Feingold told campaign volunteers Monday morning in Madison they were about to elect him to the U.S. Senate and Democrat Hillary Clinton to the presidency.

Feingold called Clinton the most qualified person to be elected president in the history of the United States and said vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine was “exactly what you would dream of” in a public official.

“And I’m thanking you in advance for making sure that they have a United States Senate that they can work with, and that begins right here,” Feingold said.

Feingold said Democrats needed to win several seats in order to take back the majority in the U.S. Senate so Republicans can’t block Clinton’s agenda.

“And there is no way that that works unless we do it right here in Wisconsin in this race,” Feingold said. “And I want you to know, I expect us to win tomorrow night. That’s what I expect to happen.”

Feingold has held several small events with campaign volunteers over the past several days, while Republican U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson concludes his race on a bus tour with U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan and Gov. Scott Walker.

“Actually, what he’s doing is hanging around with a bunch of Republican operatives talking to each other, and I’m talking to everybody,” Feingold said.

While polls have consistently shown Feingold leading Johnson this election cycle, the latest Marquette University Law School poll showed Johnson had nearly erased that edge, trailing Feingold by just 1 percentage point.
