More than two dozen Republican state legislators have asked the Legislature’s finance committee to release funds for a statewide voter education campaign on Wisconsin’s voter ID law.

Thirty-four Republicans sent the letter to state finance committee heads on Thursday, urging them to take up a funding request from the state elections board.

Earlier this month, the board requested $250,000 for a campaign to educate the public on the voter ID law. The letter urges the committee to consider the funding request a “top priority,” in light of the upcoming presidential election.

The voter ID law saw its first major test during last month’s presidential primary, and many in and outside the Legislature have expressed concern that the public is still confused by the law.

The letter comes as a federal trial on voter ID continues in Madison, with plaintiffs arguing it confuses voters and places a disproportionate burden on certain populations, including young people and minorities.
