In an effort to address lifeguard shortages, communities in Wisconsin are trying to lure potential employees by offering things like free gear, school credit, and higher wages.

Jessy West, a 32-year-old Wausau resident, has filed a claim with the National Labor Relations Board after he says he was fired from a fast-food restaurant for participating in last month's strike to raise the minimum wage.

The small central Wisconsin village of Brokaw is asking Marathon County and two surrounding town governments for help in solving a financial crisis brought on by the shutdown of a local paper mill.

The Wausau City Council has agreed unanimously to give the struggling Wausau Center Mall a one-time payment of $375,000 and a waiver on five years rent and parking ramp fees -- albeit with some strings attached.
