Lessons Learned from Iraq. The focus of a public forum to be held at the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County on November 16 is an examination of how the Iraq experience might shape future U.S. foreign policy and military practice, especially in regard to the emerging field of transformation operations. We will talk with two of the forum's participants: Colonel Thomas C. Greenwood, USMC, Director of the U.S. Marine Corps Command and Staff College in Quantico, Virginia, and Eric Giordano, Asst. Professor of Political Science at UW-Marathon County.

With U.S. Representative Mark Green campaigning in the governor’s race, Wisconsin’s 8th Congressional seat is up for grabs. The Wisconsin Public Radio-St. Norbert College Poll released earlier this month shows John Gard-R and Steve Kagen-D in a neck-and-neck tie at 43%.
We will pre-empt this week’s Route 51 with a pre-recorded debate between the two candidates that was originally broadcast on October 26th in northeast Wisconsin from UW-Green Bay. Listen

This November voters will be asked if Wisconsin should reinstate the Death Penalty. We talk with two people representing both sides of the debate. First, we hear from Ray Krone, a former death row inmate who spent ten years in prison before being exonerated in 2002. In the second half-hour we talk with John McAdams, Associate Professor of Political Science at Marquette University, who recently wrote an article in favor of reinstatement. Wisconsin Should Have the Death Penalty appeared in the Spring 2006 edition of Wisconsin Interest, published by the Wisconsin Public Policy Research Institute. Listen

Wisconsin's Proposed Marriage Amendment. We hear from nationally syndicated columnist Deb Price from a recent forum in Marshfield. Price is a staunch supporter of gay marriage, her marriage to her long time partner is legal in Canada, and fears this amendment is discriminatory and will also outlaw civil unions in the state. We'll also talk with Lee Webster, Wausau representative of the Family Research Institute of Wisconsin, which supports the amendment as a means to strengthen and protect marriage.

Farmers in Wisconsin and around the country are facing further challenges to their livelihood with proposals in the fiscal year 2007 National Budget for what some are calling a “milk tax” and cuts in farm subsidies. In addition, family farms are dissappearing with fewer young people willing to carrying on the family tradition. Bob Prahl and Sandi Cihlar, local dairy farmers, join us to talk about the impact this will have on farms and, in turn, our community. Tim Buttke, Partnership for Progressive Agriculture co-chair, will join the discussion, which will also focus on a proposed dairy institute in Marathon County, the Dairyland State Academy, which would provide practical real-life education for aspiring dairy farmers.
