Photos obtained from Citizens Acting For Rail Safety show the Coon Creek Bridge south of Stoddard held up by wooden planks. BNSF conducted an emergency fix this summer and will replace the bridge early next year. The company says the bridge is safe and inspected more frequently.
Concerned citizens are speaking up about crumbling concrete, exposed rebar, and deteriorating trestles on area railroad bridges which trains carrying cargos of volatile oil travel have been traveling over — concerns that are being echoed by federal officials and legislators as well.

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx told La Crosse-area residents during a meeting with them on Wednesday that their concerns regarding rail safety in the region would inform revised rail safety rules that are currently being worked on in Washington, D.C.

As more Bakken oil makes its way through Wisconsin from North Dakota to oil refineries, Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wisc., met with La Crosse residents on Tuesday to discuss their growing concerns for rail safety in the region.
