WHAD INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

WHAD-FM inters get hands-on experience in production, newsgathering, public relations and fund-raising. The Program is designed to provide an opportunity to explore careers in the broadcasting industry while providing meaningful and practical business experience. WHAD prides itself on providing one of the best broadcast internship programs in the state of Wisconsin. Because of this, competition for internships is fierce.

INFORMATION

WHAD offers internships year-round. The internship term is based on the academic calendar.

This is an unpaid internship.

Intern positions are available in news-gathering, production, public relations, and corporate sponsorship. Interns are welcome to focus on one discipline or sample all areas.

APPLICATION PROCESS

All those interested should fully complete the attached application and submit a resume/cover letter.

Applicants may be considered for positions other than those they list as preferences on their applications.

WHAD's Intern Coordinator will review all applications and will request personal interviews with finalists.

APPLICATION DEADLINES

Applications are considered throughout the year as need arises. For best consideration, candidates are urged to apply as follows:

For Fall Internships (which generally begin in August or September) apply by mid-July
(Tip: many apply in May/June for internships starting the following fall.)

For Winter Internships (which generally begin in January) apply by late November

For Summer Internships (which begin in May or June) apply by mid-April

WHAD reserves the right to terminate an individual student's internship at any point for reasons such as poor attendance, misconduct or other serious problems.

Internship Options

On-Air Producer

Serve as on-air producer for the live, statewide call-in programs that originate in the Milwaukee studios of Wisconsin Public Radio (weekdays 9 – 11 am and 3 – 6 pm).

Welcome guests into studios. Set up telephone bank and computer system before each program. Screen calls from listeners who call in to participate in the program, making sure listeners are on topic/on focus.

Record, edit, and distribute on-air promos each day.

Participate in promotional appearances, fundraisers, and remote broadcasts.

Events Assistant

Assist with promotional projects for IDEAS 90.7 (promotional mailings, remote broadcasts, fund-raisers and other special events.)

Write and circulate promotional material for Wisconsin Public Radio and IDEAS 90.7 WHAD (press releases, feature articles, Web-based newsletters, invitations, print advertisements, etc.)

Assist with procurement of goods and services on a trade-out basis. Calling for donations of food and services for our on-air pledge drives, recruiting volunteers for station events, making cold-calls for our corporate sales staff, and writing press releases and feature stories.

Corporate Sponsorship Assistant

Assist Wisconsin Public Radio's Southeastern Wisconsin's development officers in finding and maintaining relationships with corporate sponsors.

Assist in researching and conducting cold calls for new clients.

Assist in preparing proposals for new clients and renewals. Attend client meetings to observe how development officers present Wisconsin Public Radio as a possible media partner.

Newsgathering Assistant

Work with news bureau chief to attend press conferences, interview newsmakers, and record and edit audio cuts for broadcast on the Wisconsin Public Radio network. Prepare scripts to accompany cuts.

Become familiar with news coverage technology, ethics and law. Keep up on current issues, events and newsmakers in the Milwaukee area.

After training, use accepted and professional recording techniques, voicing techniques, and digital editing techniques to create news pieces.
