WHWC-FM, Spectrum West Recognized with WBA Award of Excellence

A special Wisconsin Public Radio broadcast of an events facility town hall meeting in Eau Claire was recognized this month by the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association as one of the best three specialty programs in the state in 2012.

The Clear Vision Town Hall meeting was broadcast on WPR's Ideas Network station 88.3 WHWC. The March 29, 2012 meeting and broadcast were moderated by Al Ross, host Spectrum West. The program placed third in WBA's News and Talk Radio Specialty Programming category. The award was presented May 4 at the WBA Awards Gala in Madison.

The two-hour Clear Vision event was broadcast from the RCU Corporate Offices in Eau Claire. The evening's discussion featured a panel that including Mike Rindo of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Linda John of Visit Eau Claire and Ben Richgruber of the Eau Claire Regional Arts Council. In addition to moderating the panel's discussion, Ross took comments and questions from audience members both on-site and online.

The live forum served as part of an ongoing opportunity for community members to learn about and comment on proposed event facilities in Eau Claire. The meeting was a catalyst of the discussions surrounding what is known as the Confluence Project and the proposed redevelopment of Downtown Eau Claire, many of which were broadcast by 88.3 FM.

The West Side Wins Northwest Broadcast News Association Award

The West Side, hosted by Rich Kremer, is the winner of a 2013 Eric Sevareid Award for talk and public affairs programming. The award was presented to Kremer at the Northwest Broadcast News Association's Midwest Journalism Conference on April 13 for The West Side's presentation of the 93rd State Assembly District Candidate Forum.

The award-winning forum was broadcast remotely from Durand High School on November 1, 2012 and featured candidates from the 93rd State Assembly District Warren Petryk (R-Eleva) and Jeff Smith (D-Eau Claire). It offered a unique opportunity for listeners to experience and participate in The West Side both in person and online through streaming video and social media.

The Eric Sevareid Awards are presented annually by the Northwest Broadcast News Association to broadcast news operations and journalists working in small, medium and large markets. The NBNA is an association of radio and television news professionals and students that serves six states in the Midwest: Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North and South Dakota and Wisconsin.
