Two elected officials agree: a formerly stray dog may be more popular right now than any Wisconsin politician.

With K-9 tee-shirts and other fanfare the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team brought home their new unofficial mascot last evening. A former stray dog, now named “Hank,” walked into the Brewers’ spring training camp in Arizona a few weeks ago. On some days, he is now getting more publicity than the baseball team.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett says Hank is already a bigger hit than people in his line of work. “I can tell you, I just ran into someone who was down at spring training yesterday, and they were saying that there were probably a hundred people in line waiting to meet Hank,” Barrett said. “He’s far more popular than any politician in the state of Wisconsin.”

Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele agrees. “Hank ought to run!” he said. “I don’t know, we should do some polling to see how Hank does: Walker, Burke, Hank. He’d probably be independent, I’m guessing, and run on the Milkbone ticket.”

Sales of the new Hank t-shirts and other items will help raise money, not for politicians, but for the Wisconsin Humane Society in Milwaukee
