A preliminary vote by Wisconsin lawmakers would give state troopers a raise, but not other state workers.

The Joint Committee on Employment Relations voted unanimously to give troopers a 3 percent pay boost. Lawmakers cited a concern about turnover and the high cost to train troopers.

Senate Minority Leader Jennifer Shilling said the vote is a good first step.

“This gets us part of the way. It gets us along the path but certainly — to use a state trooper term — not to the mile marker that I feel comfortable with, with our state troopers and their contract,” Shilling said.

In March, the committee rejected a plan that called for a 17 percent pay raise. Troopers will pay more for health insurance along with other state workers. In May, the state insurance board voted to increase deductibles and copayments.

The full Legislature would have to approve any final decision on pay.
