Big Question: Should Police Be Militarized?

The Ferguson Police Department was heavily criticized for using excessive force and military-style equipment – including body armor, short-barreled assault rifles and armored vehicles – to quell protesters after the shooting death of an unarmed black teen.  Supporters say that police need to do whatever they can to maintain peace.  Should law enforcement agencies be allowed to use military-type gear for everyday policing?
