Jordan Allen - Norman talks to cellist Jordan Allen who performed with the Middleton Community Orchestra on Wednesday evening at the Middleton Performing Arts Center. The orchestra performed Bloch's Schelomo, Copland's John Henry and Stravinsky's Firebird Suite.
Allen is a Wisconsin native and began studying the cello at the age of 10. He attended the Eastman School of Music where he studied with Steven Doane. After receiving his Bachelor's degree, Allen moved to Miami Beach, Florida to play with the New World Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas. He currently plays with the Madison Symphony Orchestra and participates in other freelance teaching and performing opportunities in the Madison area.

Philip Setzer - Norman interviews violinist Philip Setzer, a member and one of the founders of the Grammy winning Emerson String Quartet. Setzer is also touring and recording the piano trios of Schubert and Mendelssohn with cellist David Finckel and pianist Wu Han.
It is this trio that is performing Friday evening at the Wisconsin Union Theater in Madison following master classes that afternoon. They will perform an all-Mendelssohn program including the Sonata for cello & piano in D-Major Op. 58 as well as the two trios for piano, violin, and cello (in D-minor, Op 49, and in C-minor, Op. 66).

Alexander Sitkovstsky - Norman talks with British violinist Alexander Sitkovstsky who played with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra on Friday, February 24th at 8 pm in the Capitol Theater in Madison. His performance included Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Major.
Sitkovetsky was born in Moscow in 1983 into a family with an established musical tradition. At the age of eight he was invited to become a pupil at the Yehudi Menuhin School in England studying the violin with Natasha Boyarsky. In 1996, Alexander played Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in Budapest with Menuhin conducting.

Donato Cabrera - Norman interviews Donato Cabrera, Music Director of the Green Bay Symphony Orchestra. The Orchestra celebrates its 98th season in Green Bay.
On Saturday, February 11th, the orchestra performs at the Weidner Center with the theme "The Romance of Spring". It will include the Strauss Voices of Spring, Wagner's Siegfried Idyll and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4.

Naha Greenholtz - Norman talked with violinist Naha Greenholtz who was recently named the new Concert master for the Madison Symphony Orchestra. She was born in Kyoto, Japan and raised in Canada.
She made her solo debut at the age of 14 playing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. She received her BM from the Juilliard School in 2007.
Ms. Greenholtz played live from Studio One in Madison with pianist Jeannie Yu. She performed the first, third and final movements from Franck's Sonata in A for Violin and Piano and Elgar's Salute to Love. (By the artist's request, only portions of these performances are available here.)

Soprano Emily Birsan - Norman interviews soprano Emily Birsan who performed with the Middleton Community Orchestra at the Middleton Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, December 23rd. She sang arias by Puccini, Donizetti and Mozart.
Ms. Birsan is a resident artist with the Lyric Opera of Chicago. This season she covers the roles of Lucia, Papagena and Armida and performs the roles of Stella (Tales of Hoffman) and Xenia (Boris Godunov). She was born in Appleton, Wisconsin and is a graduate of the UW Madison School of Music.

The Ekaterinburg Classical Trio - Norman welcomes the Ekaterinburg Classical Trio aka "The Kat Trio" back to WPR's Studio One in Madison for a live Midday Recital. Current members of the trio include violinist Victoria Gorbich, clarinetist Vladislav Gorbich and pianist Julie Page. They play music by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Brahms, Dvorak, Shostakovich, Bruch, Bohm, Gershwin and Frolov.
The trio has released ten CD's since their formation in 1998 in Ekaterinburg, Russia. They are now touring as "artists-in-residence" with Wisconsin Public Radio and the Chazen Museum of Art.Studio Photo 1 / Studio Photo 2

Trevor Stephenson - Norman interviews Trevor Stephenson, harpsichordist and Artistic Director of the Madison Bach Musicians. They will be performing their holiday concert on Friday, December 16th starting at 8pm at the First Congregational Church, 1609 Unversity Ave in Madison. The concert will include Fall and Winter from The Four Seasons by Vivaldi, Concerto in G minor, Op. 6 no. 8, "Christmas" by Corelli, and Cantata 61, Nun Komm der Heiden Heiland by Bach.
Trevor Stephenson tours throughout the United States regularly giving concerts, lectures, and masterclasses.

Bill McGlaughlin - Norman is joined by Bill McGlaughlin, host of the public radio program Exploring Music. He is an accomplished composer, conductor, music educator, and Peabody Award-winning radio host. McGlaughlin picks some his favorite selections including Scarlotti's Sonata in E and Guitar music by Ernesto Bitetti.
Bill McGlaughlin obtained both his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from Philadelphia's Temple University.

Pianist Paul Schoenfield - Norman interviews composer and pianist Paul Schoenfield who will be giving a composition masterclass today and on Saturday, November 19th will present the world premiere of his Three Rhapsodies for Piano Quintet featuring the Pro Arte Quartet with Brian Hsue at a free concert at Mills Concert Hall at the UW Madison.
These appearances are part of the Centennial Celebration of the Pro Arte Quartet.

Violinist Midori - Norman talks to internationally known violinist Midori. She will be performing Shostakovich's Concerto No.1 with the Madison Symphony Orchestra on November 11, 2011.
Midori was born in Japan and started playing violin when she was just three years old. She made her first recording at the age of 14 for Philips when she performed music of Bach and Vivaldi with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Pinchas Zukerman.

Maria Kanyova - Norman interviews soprano Maria Kanyova who will be singing the role of Tatiana in Tchaikovsky's opera Eugene Onegin performed by the Madison Symphony Orchestra and the Madison Opera conducted by John DeMain on Friday, November 4th and 6th, 2011 at the Overture Center.
Ms. Kanyova is performing throughout the U.S. in 2011 including company debuts with San Francisco Opera and with the Lyric Opera Kansas City as Pat Nixon in Nixon in China. She will also debut with Tulsa Opera as Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly. She recently performed with Madison Opera in its 2011 'Opera in the Park? concert. She resides in Chicago.

Walter Mays - Norman talks to composer Walter Mays whose work String Quartet No.2 will have its world-premier on Saturday, October 22 in Mills Concert Hall on the UW-Madison campus as part of the Pro Arte's 100th Birthday celebration.
In 1998, his Quartet in G Minor, also commissioned by the University of Wisconsin-Madison for the Pro Arte Quartet, was nominated for a Pulitzer prize. He is currently "Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor of Music" at Wichita State University.

Lynn Harrell - Norman interviews cellist Lynn Harrell who played with the Madison Symphony Orchestra Friday through Sunday, November 14-16, 2011.
The performance included Rossini's Overture toThe Barber of Seville, Lalo's Cello Concerto in D minor and the Sibelius Symphony No. 2. Harrell was born in New York and but began his musical studies in Dallas before attending Juilliard and the Curtis Institute of Music. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the first Avery Fisher Award.

Pro Arte Quartet - Norman Gilliland hosted a live concert by the world renowned Pro Arte Quartet in WPR's Buck Studio.
The Quartet was founded in Belgium 100 years ago. The quartet's members suddenly became "Artists in Residence" at the UW-Madison in 1938 when they were stranded after Germany invaded Belgium just prior to World War II. On October 7th, 2011, they played Barber's String Qt Opus 11, music from Shostakovich's String Qt No. 4 and Beethoven's Razumovsky String Qt.

Ilya Yakushev - Norman interviewed pianist Ilya Yakushev who played with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra in the Capitol Theater at the Overture Center in Madison on Friday evening, October 7, 2011. The performance included Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 1 and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.
Mr. Yakushev received his first award at age 12 as a prizewinner of the Young Artists Concerto Competition in his native St. Petersburg. He recently released two CDs on the IY-Records label

Harvey de Souza and John Heley - Stephanie Elkins interviews two members of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble, Violinist Harvey de Souza and Cellist John Heley.
The Ensemble was created in 1967 to perform larger chamber works, from quintets to octets. The members are drawn from the principal players of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber orchestra. They tour worldwide and have have over 30 CDs to their name. They played at the Wisconsin Union Theater on September 30, 2011 at 7:30pm.

Frank Glazer - Norman talks to pianist Frank Glazer, a Wisconsin native who started playing piano 93 years ago! He studied under Artur Schnabel and Arnold Schoenberg.
Glazer made his debut at Town Hall in New York City on October 20, 1936. He is currently artist in residence at Bates College in Maine. He'll play at Farley's House of Piano in Madison on Friday, September 23, 2011.

Andre Watts - Norman interviews pianist Andre Watts who burst upon the music world at the age of 16 when Leonard Bernstein chose him to make his debut with the New York Philharmonic in their Young People's Concerts, broadcast nationwide on CBS-TV.
More than 45 years later, Andre Watts remains one of today's most celebrated and beloved superstars. He played Grieg at the Overture Center in Madison on September 17, 2011.
