Rachel Eve Holmes - Norman is joined in Buck Studio for a live performance by soprano Rachel Eve Holmes and pianist Claire Mallory. Holmes recently performed in the Four Seasons production of "A Little Night Music".
Her upcoming role of Kid Clementine in the Fresco Opera Theatre's production of "The Good, the Bad, and the Divas" runs from September 7 - 9 at the Overture Center.

Charles Dieterle - Final Forte Finalist Charles Dieterle joins Norman in Buck studio to play some of the pieces that brought him to the final four. Dieterle started playing trombone in the fifth grade, and learned tuba in eighth grade. He recently graduated from Madison West High School and has developed an interest in jazz. During his high school career, Dieterle joined Jazz West, the High School's jazz ensemble. He'll be attending De Paul University in the fall.
Joining Dieterle in Buck Studio are Vincent Fuh, on piano, and Will Greene, playing tenor sax. The three perform live music, as well as a piece that Dieterle and Greene composed together.

Anthony Cudzinovic - Final Forte finalist Anthony Cudzinovic joins Norman in Buck Studio to discuss his influences as a violinist and to perform a movement from Khachaturian's Violin Concerto in D minor, the piece that got him to the final four.
Cudzinovic will be a senior at Milton High School this coming fall and has been playing violin since he was 3-years-old. Cudzinovic was taught to play the violin using the Suzuki method.

Raffi Besalyan - Norman sits down with Raffi Besalyan, renowned pianist and Artist/Teacher-Associate Professor of Piano at UW-Stevens Point. Besalyan discusses his recently recorded CD entitled "Dance, Drama, Decadence" and plays several of his favorite songs from the CD.

Balalaika and Domra Association of America - Norman welcomes Victor Gorodinsky, David Cooper and Galina Dement'eva from The Balalaika and Domra Association of America. Their 2012 convention will be hosted by the University of Wisconsin Russian Folk Orchestra. They will be presenting a Russian festival concert with a 100 piece orchestra on July 13th at the Middleton Performing Arts Center.

Susan Hellaur and Marsha Genensky - Two members of the group Anonymous 4, Susan Hellauer and Marsha Genensky, meet with Norman to discuss the historical aspects of their music and it's role in the Madison Early Music Festival. The Festival runs from July 7th through July 14th, 2012.

Stanislava Varshavski and Diana Shapiro - Stanislava Varshavski and Diana Shapiro joined Norman in the studio to showcase their skills as a piano duo. The duo discussed their unique meeting, and how they used their different views to push each other as musicians.
Shapiro and Varshavski will be playing at Farley's House of Pianos on Friday, June 29th at 7:30 pm. The duo will also be performing at Farley's on Sunday, July 1st at 4:30 pm.

Michael Doerr - Michael Doerr joins Norman in the studio to discuss his growth as a musician and the help he's received from his teacher, Raffi Besalyan.
Doerr comes from Eagle River, and is part of a family of pianists. In this hour of the Midday, Norman and Doerr listen to a few recordings performed by Besalyan, then Doerr plays a few pieces himself live in Buck Studio.

Garrick Olsen - Norman welcomes the 2012 winner of The Bolz Young Artist Competition Garrick Olsen to the WPR performance studio. Olsen has been playing piano since age nine. He was a winner of the MSO's 2008 Fall Youth Concerto Competition, received third place in the 2010 Chopin Youth Piano Competition, and was admitted to the Jacobs School of Music Summer Piano Academy at Indiana University in summer 2011. He performs pieces by Bach, Chopin, Scriabin and contemporary Canadian composer Marc-Andre Hamelin.

George Takei - George Takei visits Norman in WPR's Milwaukee studios to discuss his childhood in a Japanese-American internment camp, his work as an actor, and narrating the "Sci-Fi Spectacular" for the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.
Takei narrated the "Sci-Fi Spectacular" in Milwaukee on June 15th, 16th, and 17th. Norman and George Takei also discussed his role as Hikaru Sulu on Star Trek, and his current artistic projects.

Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society - Norman welcomes the Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society to the WPR Studios. Performing are founders Stephanie Jutt, flute and Jeffrey Sykes, piano, along with Jean-Michel Fonteneau, cello and Axel Strauss, violin. They'll be performing pieces by Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky at several concerts this weekend in Madison and Spring Green, WI.

David Yoshiaki Ko - From WPR's performance studio, Norman Gilliland interviews pianist David Yoshiaki Ko who plays pieces by Franz Liszt, Alberto Ginastera and Beethoven. Ko recently performed at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music just prior to the 2012 PianoArts Competition. He's the winner of the 2002 Russian Music Competition and the 2010 PianoArts North American Piano Competition. The 20 year old attends The Juilliard School in new York and Columbia University where he's studying Neuroscience.

John DeMain - Maestro John DeMain joins Norman in Buck Studio to talk about and play music by iconic composer George Gershwin. DeMain conducted the Madison Symphony on May 11, 12, and 13 for an all Gershwin concert.
John DeMain has conducted George Gershwin's music in over 400 performances. In this interview, DeMain discusses excerpts of Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, An American in Paris, Rhapsody in Blue, and Cuban Overture.

The Portland Cello Project - Norman hosts a live broadcast of the Portland Cello Project from WPR's studios. They are a remarkable group that has collaborated with indie stars like Thao Nguyen, Laura Gibson and members of the Decemberists. They perform a wide variety of music including pieces derived from classical, hip-hop and even heavy metal. They performed at the Majestic Theater in Madison on May 3, 2012.

John Harbison - Composer John Harbison joins Norman in the studio to discuss the new string quartet he's written for the Pro Arte Quartet.
String Quartet No. 5 will be performed by Pro Arte Saturday April 21st at Mills Concert Hall at 8:00 p.m. Pro Arte will also be performing the String Quartet No. 5 at the Chazen at 12:30 Sunday April 22nd. This performance will be broadcast live by Wisconsin Public Radio.

Daniele Mack - Norman interviews soprano Daniela Mack, who will be performing as Angelina (Cinderella) in Rossini's La Cenerentola (Cinderella) April 27th at 8:00pm and April 29th at 2:30pm. Both performances are at the Overture Center for the Arts in Madison.
The director of the show, Garnett Bruce, has brought the classic tale to 1930s Hollywood where Angelina (Cinderella) lives with her evil stepfather and wicked stepsisters.

Philippe Bianconi - Philippe Bianconi joins Norman in the studio for a live performance of Piano Concerto Number 4. Bianconi goes into detail on his love of the Concerto, and gives some of his insights to the piece. He also performed Des Abends by Robert Schumann and Feux d'Artifice by Claude Debussy.
Bianconi performed with the Madison Symphony Orchestra March 30, 31, and April 1st in Overture Hall.

William Bolcom and Joan Morris - Norman interviews Grammy award-winning composer and pianist William Bolcom and his wife, vocalist Joan Morris. Bolcom's Piano Quintet No. 2 had its official premiere on Saturday, March 24th in the Wisconsin Union Theater.
This is part of the 100th anniversary celebration of the UW's Pro Arte String Quartet. Pianist Christopher Taylor performed with the Pro Arte.

Navan - Live from WPR's Studio One, we hear Celtic harmony from the group Navan. Norman talks to them about their music and how diverse it is. In fact, they learned to sing the songs in their original languages of Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Brittany, Cornwall and the Isle of Man.
The group recently released their fourth CD, Oran nan Tonn.

Los Angeles Guitar Quartet - Norman welcomes the members of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, who performed with the Madison Symphony Orchestra. They played the Brahms Symphony No. 3, Rodrigo's Concierto Andaluz and Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio Espagnol. As an added bonus, the group performed live in our studios.
The Grammy Award-winning group consistently plays to sold-out houses world-wide. Their programs often include Latin, African, Far East, Irish, Folk and American Classics that transport listeners around the world in a single concert experience.
