Alice Bartsch - Norman sits down with Alice Bartsch, Concert Master of the Middleton Community Orchestra, to talk about their Winter Concert performance on Wednesday, February 27th at the Middleton Performing Arts Center.
The Winter Concert begins at 7:30 pm and general admission is $10, students enter free. The concert features 20-year-old Bartsch on violin. She is a member of the first violin section in the Madison Symphony and studies with Felicia Moye, Professor of Violin at UW Madison

Tasmin Little - Tasmin Little joined Norman to discuss her project, The Naked Violin, to introduce a wider variety of people to music, as well as to listen to some of her recordings. Little played with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra on February 22.
The Naked Violin is Tasmin Little's side project; it's a website where she hosts a variety of different violin solo pieces intended to introduce people of all ages to the beauty of violin music. It's aim is to grow a greater appreciation of orchestral and violin music by allowing people to download violin music for free.

Garrick Olsen - Norman is joined by the 2012 Final Forte winner Garrick Olsen for conversation and music. Olsen recently spent six weeks in Tanglewood for a music festival, where he was able to play to play Ozawa Hall. Olsen will be graduating from high school in the spring and will be auditioning at Curtis Institute of Music, where he would like to attend college.

Daniel del Pino - Pianist Daniel del Pino joins Norman in the studio to discuss his performance at Farley House Pianos on Friday January 25. Daniel del Pino was born in Lebanon, but moved when he was 3-years-old. His musical influences come from living in Spain and the United States.
As a child, del Pino listened extensively to Frederic Chopin and learned how to read music using his sheet music. del Pino said he enjoys the focus that Chopin put into writing music for piano, and remains one of his favorite composers to play.

Gabriela Montero - Pianist Gabriela Montero joined Norman in the studio to discuss her performances with the Madison Symphony Orchestra on January 18, 19, and 20 to play Jennifer Higdon's Blue Cathedral, Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1, and Dvorak's Symphony No. 6.
Montero started playing the piano when she was 7-months-old. Despite having started playing the piano at such an early age, Montero says she has managed to maintain her love of the instrument by focusing on artistic projects rather than career driven motivations.

Austin Larson - Norman is joined by Neale-Silva winner Austin Larson for live music and conversation. Larson started playing the horn as a freshman in high school, and was inspired to continue playing by the Richard Wagner opera Siegfried when the titular character plays his hunting horn to wake a dragon. Piano player Joe Hauer accompanied Larson for his performance.
Larson will be playing in the Horns A Plenty Christmas concert Saturday December 22 at UW Fox Valley at 3:00 p.m.

Soprano Emily Birsan - Norman is joined by soprano Emily Birsan, who will be performing with the Middleton Community Orchestra December 19th at the Middleton Performing Arts Center. Birsan is halfway through her internship with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and is covering the role of Gretel in their production of Humperdink's Hansel and Gretel from December 2012 - January 2013.

Raymond Benson - Writer and composer Raymond Benson joins Norman in Buck Studio to celebrate the 50th anniversary of James Bond films. Benson is the author of six original James Bond novels, and three movie novelizations. He is the third continuation author and first American to write for the James Bond series.
Benson and Norman also discuss the history of several composers who helped create the iconic theme music for the James Bond movies.

Michael Daugherty - Michael Daugherty joins Norman on the Midday for music and discussion. Daugherty was in Madison for a collaboration performance by UW-Madison and Sun Prairie High School String Quartet at Mills Hall at 8:00 pm.
Daugherty told Norman he uses his travels, antiques and books as inspiration for his creativity when composing. He is currently working on a string concerto which draws inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright.

The Naughton Twins - Norman welcomes pianists Christina and Michelle Naughton aka "The Naughton Twins" to our studios. The sisters are native Madisonians, but now reside in New York. They are both graduates of the Curtis Institute of Music and perform all over the world. They've recently released their album recorded at the Sendesaal in Bremen, Germany on the Orfeo label. They're performing the Poulenc Concerto for Two Pianos with the Madison Symphony Orchestra on November 2-4, 2012.

cellist Christopher Peck - Christopher Peck joins Norman on the Midday to play Bach's Sixth Suite for unaccompanied cello. Peck is one of the 2012 Neale-Silva Competition, and is a junior at UW-Wisconsin. The two discuss the importance of the Sixth Suite as well as the structure and mechanics of the composition.

William Joyner - Tenor William Joyner joins Norman to discuss his upcoming role as Gustav III in the historic opera Un Ballo in Maschera at the Overture Center on October 26 and 28. Joyner and Norman discuss the rich history of the opera and the emotional depth woven into the story by composer Giuseppe Verdi.

violinist James Ehnes - Norman interviews violinist James Ehnes who will be performing the Bartok Violin Concerto No. 2 with the Madison Symphony Orchestra and John Demain at the Overture Center for the Arts in Madison on October 12, 13 and 14, 2012. Ehnes has performed in over 30 countries on five continents, appearing regularly in the world's great concert halls and with many of the most celebrated orchestras and conductors.

Imani Winds - Bassoonist Monica Ellis and flutist Valerie Coleman of Imani Winds join Norman in the studio to discuss the groups inception and growth. Imani Winds will be performing at Mills Hall on Friday, September 28th.
The group met while attending grad school in New York, and in the last 16 years they have worked to weave European, American, African and Latin American traditions into their music.

Ancora String Quartet - The Ancora String Quartet join Norman live in the studio to play several pieces from their repertoire. Pieces included Mendelssohn Fuges No 2 & 3 as well as Beethoven's Opus 18 No.5 and Robert Schumann's Quartet No.1 in A Minor. Ancora String Quartet preformed their Fall Recital at the First Unitarian Society on September 15th.
