October 10, 2013: Congressmen Duffy and Kind on the Government Shutdown - Two North Central Wisconsin Congressmen, Republican Sean Duffy and Democrat Ron Kind, will appear on Wisconsin Public Radio’s Route 51, Thursday morning, October 10th from 10 to 11 a.m., and take live phone calls from our listeners on the government shut down and debt ceiling crisis. Host Glen Moberg will interview Congressman Duffy from 10 to 10:30 am, and Congressman Kind from 10:30 to 11 am.

October 3, 2013: Regional Impact of the Affordable Care Act - We'll examine the impact of the Affordable Care Act on health providers and patients in North Central Wisconsin. We'll be joined by our guests, Sid Sczygelski, CFO and Senior Vice President of Finance of Aspirus Wausau Hospital, Laura Scudiere, Executive Director of the Bridge Community Health Clinic of Wausau, which serves many low income and Medicaid patients, and Sara Finger, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Alliance for Women’s Health. September 26, 2013: Architectural Historian, Richard Guy Wilson - This week we'll feature a conversation with world-renowned architectural historian Richard Guy Wilson. Professor Wilson holds the Commonwealth Professor’s Chair in Architectural History at the University of Virginia (which was founded by architect Thomas Jefferson), and has served as an advisor and television commentator for PBS, A&E, and dozens of segments of America’s Castles. He will be giving a free public lecture on “Preserving Our Historical Treasures” Wednesday October 2nd at the Grand Theater in Wausau in connection with the historic theater’s capital campaign. Wilson will be joined on the radio program by Jim O’Connell, executive director of the Performing Arts Foundation and Mary Roberts, community volunteer with the Grand Theater Foundation.

September 19, 2013: Menominee Place Names - We'll talk about the Menominee Place Names Map, which merges modern satellite imagery with the ancient Menominee language, and shows the original tribal names of cities, villages, lakes, streams and landforms in central Wisconsin. It is now on display at the UW-Stevens Point Museum of Natural History. Our guests will be museum director and archaeologist Ray Reser and map creator Mike Hoffman, one of the few people still alive who speaks the Menominee language. The map is a product of 30 years of research, and is the first project of its kind in Wisconsin.

September 12, 2013: Rural Health Initiative - This week we'll focus on central Wisconsin’s Rural Health Initiative, a program that brings medical care and check-ups to farm families whose busy lives make it hard to access clinics and hospitals in urban centers. Discussion will include the special medical challenges facing farm families with Rural Health Initiative Executive Director Rhonda Strebel, including the dangers of agricultural work, the difficulty of scheduling regular medical care, and the problem of expensive, high deductible insurance. The Rural Health Initiative started in Shawano County ten years ago through the efforts of ThedaCare and the Shawano Medical Center. The program expanded to Outagamie and Waupaca Counties last year, and may expand to Marathon County in the near future.

Little Rock Lake Acid Rain Experiment - This week we focus on a decades long experiment on acid rain pollution at Little Rock Lake, north of Minocqua. The pristine hourglass lake was divided into two halves with a barrier- one half received gradual doses of acid and the other half was left untouched. The experiment, which concluded recently with the removal of the barrier, has been credited with changing national environmental policy. Mountain Biking in Central Wisconsin - A new effort to make the Wausau area a premier mountain biking destination is the focus of Route 51 this week. Local cyclists want Wausau to become one of only a handful of International Mountain Biking Association Ride Centers, which could bring thousands of new tourists to the area. Guests include: Hansi Johnson, Midwest Regional Director of the International Mountain Biking Association; Matt Block, member of the board of directors of the Wausau based Off Road Cycling Coalition; and Bill Duncanson, Director of the Wausau and Marathon County Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department.

Local Expansion of Skyward, student information software company - We welcome Jim and Jean King, the founders of the student information software company Skyward, along with Portage County Executive Patty Dreier. The Kings announced ambitious expansion plans for their company, including the construction of a new global headquarters in Stevens Point, and increasing the number of employees from about 400 to over 1000. The plans were made possible by a legislative victory, in which the state's single vendor policy was repealed, allowing Skyward to continue serving more than half the schools in Wisconsin. We'll discuss the regional economic impact of the Skyward expansion and the bipartisan coalition of local politicians that achieved the legislative victory.

Sid Kyler Dixieland Jazz Band - Legendary band leader and trumpet player Sid Kyler will perform live in our Wisconsin Public Radio studios with saxophonist Duane Askew, clarinetist Louis Pradt, bassist Roger Pickering, and Route 51 host Glen Moberg on guitar. We'll talk about the influence of American jazz music and preview the Sid Kyler River Valley Jazz Festival, which happens July 19th and 20th at the Bull Falls Brewery in Wausau.
