Snow, Winds Make Travel Difficult Across Wisconsin

Update: The portions of Interstate 94 that were previously announced as closed have been re-opened.

Much of Wisconsin is under a winter storm warning on Tuesday afternoon and into this evening, with strong winds expected to make travel hazardous.

Snow fell across much of central, southern, and eastern Wisconsin on Tuesday. Once the snow tapers off, winds will be the main concern.

“The heaviest snowfall is going to cut across central Wisconsin roughly from … Minneapolis eastward to Wausau, then toward Green Bay,” said Tasos Kallas, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Green Bay.

Kallas said he “wouldn’t be surprised” if total snowfall in that area surpassed 10 inches. He said the storm is typical for Wisconsin in January, calling it a “little clipper” that came out of Canada.

Winds between 15 and 30 mph are expected to cause near white-out conditions on highways on Tuesday night.

“It’s going to be a challenge for the snow crews out there tonight,” said Kallas.

Road conditions throughout most of the state are snow covered and slippery. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says portions of I-94 westbound in northwest Wisconsin near Osseo are currently closed because of multiple accidents and runoffs. Vehicles are being re-routed onto US 10 and then US 53 north.

Motorists are being strongly encouraged to not travel unless absolutely necessary.
