DNR Board Approves Increased Wolf Hunt Quota

Updated 3:16 pm: The DNR Board approved the increase around noon today.

The Department of Natural Resources Board voted today to raise the number of wolves that could be killed in Wisconsin this year.

DNR staff had recommended that wolf hunters and trappers be allowed to kill as many as 275 gray wolves this fall. Last year 117 wolves died during the hunt, while Chippewa tribes declined to shoot any of the wolves allotted to them.

DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp says the increase in the wolf quota is justified based on available information they have.

Animal protection groups contend recent polling shows a large majority of Wisconsin residents oppose what the groups call the “trophy hunting” and trapping of wolves.
