The Cargill Corporation has announced that it will close its beef processing facility in Milwaukee on Friday, which will reportedly result in 588 lost jobs.
Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said the closing of the company is due to decreases in the demand for beef. He said that he’s concerned about the workers who will soon be unemployed.
“Our concerns right now are moving very, very quickly to how we can work with those families to ensure that they get jobs, so that they can continue to live in the city of Milwaukee and support their families,” said Barrett.

State Rep. JoCasta Zamarripa (D-Milwaukee) said that a large number of Cargill employees affected by the closing live in her district on Milwaukee’s south side. She’s asked the state Department of Workforce Development to implement programs to help the dislocated workers.
