The University of Wisconsin System has announced three finalists in the search for its next president.
The finalists include one internal candidate: Ray Cross, the chancellor of UW Colleges and UW Extension. The other finalists are Peter Garland, the executive vice chancellor and chief operating officer of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education; and Robert King, the president of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education.
Cross has overseen the UW’s “Flex Option,” a distance learning degree program for working adults that's been frequently highlighted by Gov. Scott Walker.
Garland's bio says he's worked in a variety of positions in Pennsylvania's education system since graduating from college there. King is the former chancellor of the State University of New York.
One of them will replace UW System President Kevin Reilly, who held the job since 2004. The finalists were recommended by an 18-member search and screen committee. A separate six-member committee composed entirely of UW Regents will now make the final choice. All three candidates will interview with that committee on Monday.
