  • Political Reporter: Trump Can't Afford To Ignore Wisconsin In Presidential Campaign

Donald Trump’s presidential campaign can ill afford to ignore Wisconsin, even as his poll numbers in the state have taken a dive, says Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s chief political reporter, Craig Gilbert.

Trump is scheduled to make campaign stops Tuesday in La Crosse, West Bend and Milwaukee. Trump will appear at the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee with Fox News host Sean Hannity where the Republican nominee is expected to push his law and order message after violence broke out in the city over the weekend following the fatal shooing of Sylville Smith on Saturday.

Trump and vice-presidential running mate Mike Pence have made several visits to the state since becoming the official GOP nominees, which makes some political observers wonder how Wisconsin fits into Trump’s overall campaign strategy.

The latest Marquette University Law School Poll shows Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has opened up a sizeable lead against Trump since the Democratic National Convention.

Trump’s support in Wisconsin, where he experienced his worst primary defeat, is currently soft at best, said Gilbert, the Journal Sentinel’s Washington bureau chief.

“On the other hand,” said Gilbert, “Wisconsin, demographically, fits into how he’s trying to expand his voter base. We have a disproportionate number of white, blue-collar voters, which is his strength. And also geographically, it sort of fits into where he’s trying to expand the map, which is the upper Midwest.”

Gilbert said Trump desperately needs to expand the electoral map because he has fewer opportunities in states that used to be more reliably Republican and now leaning purple or blue.

“So by necessity, Republicans are turning to the upper Midwest, where there is a set of states that even though they’ve been voting Democratic, they’ve been relatively competitive in recent cycles,” Gilbert said.

Pennsylvania is even more important than Wisconsin to Trump. Without winning Pennsylvania, Gilbert said the map looks virtually impossible for Trump. Gilbert added that Ohio and Florida are also considered must-win states.

Gov. Scott Walker advised Trump to stay on message while speaking to the media Tuesday morning. It wasn’t clear whether the governor would appear with the GOP nominee during his stops in Wisconsin. Walker said Trump should focus his rhetoric on Clinton, not sideshow distractions. Gilbert said Walker’s remark was a veiled criticism of Trump’s campaign and the media.

There’s a nationwide push to get more American students learning computer coding in school, but logistical hurdles and other concerns remain. A writer discusses the pros and cons of the “coding-for-all” approach, and why teaching “computational thinking” over coding may be a good middle ground.
