A private plane crashed Wednesday morning on an Oshkosh runway during the Experimental Aircraft Association’s annual “fly-in,” an event that attracts aviators worldwide.

The single-engine Piper Malibu crashed at about 7:45 a.m Wednesday on a runway at Wittman field in Oshkosh. Four of the five people on board were able to walk away and were taken to local hospitals. The fifth was medevaced to a hospital in Appleton.

Dick Knapinski, an EAA spokesman, said it’s rare for a crash to happen on the grounds.

“The next big step will be for the NTSB to investigate, to talk to the pilot of the aircraft, to talk to the passengers, to talk to those who may have witnessed this particular accident and find out what happened,” he said.

All runways on the grounds were reopened by mid-morning. Knapinski said four of the victims were from Michigan, the fifth from Illinois.
