Pence, Ryan Highlight GOP Campaign Stop In Mukwonago

Republican vice presidential candidate Mike Pence joined U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan and other GOP leaders Saturday at a get-out-the-vote rally in the Waukesha County community of Mukwonago.

It was one stop on a four-day tour highlighting the campaign of U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson as he tries to stave off a challenge from Democratic rival and former U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold.

But the entire GOP lineup also heaped a lot of criticism on Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton during the campaign stop.

Pence accused Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, of “fast and loose ethics ” during the last 30 years. The Indiana governor claimed national reporters are taking Clinton’s side in the campaign.

“It’s like the national media out there are doing half of Hillary Clinton’s work for her everyday,” he said.

But Pence said he and GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump have something “a little more powerful. We got a basket of the American people that are saying enough is enough.”

Ryan has declined to campaign with Trump, following a leaked recording last month of Trump making lewd remarks about women in 2005. The speaker said in October that he was “sickened” by Trump’s remarks.

But Ryan told the crowd in Mukwonago that two weeks ago, he voted for Trump, Pence and every other Republican that he saw on the ballot.

“Do you know why I did that?” Ryan asked. “Because Republicans, it is time to come home and go out and vote!”

After the rally, Ryan told Wisconsin Public Radio and two other media outlets that as president, Trump would support a conservative agenda, outlined by Ryan and other Republicans in Congress.

Minus Pence, the GOP bus tour also traveled Saturday to Janesville and Green Bay.

Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine is scheduled to campaign on Sunday in Milwaukee, Green Bay and La Crosse.
