Wrapped in a shroud of fabled stories, forgotten characters, and haunted landscapes; Paul Otteson has found his stride as a songwriter and as a composer. Upon releasing his debut album February Fables in 2011, Otteson garnered immediate recognition as a thoughtful storyteller and prolific songwriter. Three albums later, now with his dynamic band in tow; the group has established itself as a mainstay in the Madison music scene. Taking thoughtful steps drenched in lush harmonies and foreboding instrumentation, this special evening will mark the release of Paul’s third full length album: Lonesome Loon. Admittedly darker and more reflective than previous efforts; this collection of songs takes the listener through a starless night, led only by the warm glow of Otteson and his band. DIETRICH: With an ear for soundscapes reminiscent of the junkyard clatter of Tom Waits and Joe Henry, Midwestern singer/songwriter Dietrich Gosser is out in support of his 2013 release, Somewhere in the Night. Following in the footsteps of the two full-length albums that came before it, this album is a stunning example of Gosser's imaginative, yet rooted songwriting style. Each song begins with one foot planted firmly in a dusty and forlorn folk tradition; a few songs even stay there, but most use their dynamic arrangements and elusive lyrics as a vehicle to arrive at a more sweeping, romantic landscape. Tales of adolescent heartbreak and the intoxicating boredom of bank heists come to life with clanging metals and sustaining cymbals rising out of subtle, acoustic arrangements.
