Law enforcement from across the country assembled in the Village of Cameron to honor fallen Rusk County Sheriff’s Deputy Dan Glaze who was killed in the line of duty Oct. 29.

More than 1,000 officers wearing mourning bands across their badges filed into the old Cameron Elementary School gymnasium to honor Glaze. Eau Claire Police Community Relations Officer Kyle Roder said some department representatives traveled hundreds, even 1,000 miles, to get there.

“The farthest out we’ve seen so far is Orleans Parish, Louisiana, New York City,” Roder said. “We’ve seen Minnesota agencies, North Dakota, South Dakota; Thunder Bay, Ontario. So, this is that family.”

During a solemn ceremony, friend and fellow officer Lt. Corey Schalinske of the Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Office fought back tears saying goodbye to his friend and coworker.

“And to our hero, Dan, thank you for those memories, and you can rest now. Your brothers and sisters in law enforcement will continue to wear the uniform, pin on the badge, go into our communities and protect them as you did for us,” Schalinske said.

Glaze was killed while checking on a suspicious vehicle near Ladysmith. After an intense manhunt, suspect Doug Nitek of Conrath was arrested the next day for allegedly firing the fatal shot. Glaze leaves behind a wife and three children.
