Vacationers going “up north” will be able to use a main thoroughfare this summer. U.S. Highway 141 north of Green Bay is set to reopen Friday morning, just in time for Memorial Day.

State Department of Transportation spokesman Kim Rudat said the road was detoured because of a bridge replacement.

“That highway is just huge for tourist travel. I mean there’s a surge on Fridays with traffic going north and on Sunday going south,” Rudat said.

Rudat said travelers come from all over Wisconsin as well as from out of state.

“When we knew we had this project and we knew we were going to have to shut the road down, it was critical it not be shut down over the summer,” said Rudat.

There will still be construction on the road, but it will be open to through traffic. Another bridge replacement on U.S. Highway 141 is scheduled for the fall.
