Dear Friend,
As I turned into the driveway a few minutes past one o'clock last Friday, I heard Lori Skelton say, "However else you're going to spend the afternoon, I guarantee
you're not going to be falling asleep for the next half hour." I was skeptical. I was actually feeling kind of sleepy and thought I might go inside for a nap. But then Beethoven's 5th came on and I woke right up. As many times as I've heard that piece of music, with its famous thundering
beginning, I still find it extraordinary. I sat in the car, conducting the orchestra, and marveling at the genius of humankind. I hope that you, too, experience these special moments of small but profound insight, as you listen to WPR.
This month in RadioWaves, an
interview with our interim director, Mike Crane; summer goodies from NPR; lots of events and Big Top Chautauqua trips; announcing free downloads of WPR programs; and an explanation of a startling phenomenon in summer radio reception.
Stay cool,

Interview - Mike Crane, interim director
It's the perfect time to talk to Mike Crane, who just stepped up as
WPR's interim director this month. Mike brings a passion for the advancement of public radio, and a lot of experience. You can hear him the first Monday of each month at 8 AM on the Ideas Network with Joy Cardin, talking about all things WPR. This month, due to the Independence Day holiday, he'll
talk with Joy on Monday, July 12. In the meantime, enjoy my interview with Mike Crane, in which he reveals some exciting things in store for WPR, and, having
arrived in Wisconsin just two years ago, some lovely perspective on our great state. |

Summer weather and radio reception
If you've ever turned on the radio expecting to hear WPR, and instead you heard a station in Michigan or Ohio or even Georgia ... it's an
effect of something called "signal propagation enhancement." This phenomenon, caused by a temperature inversion, particularly over Lake Michigan, causes radio signals to travel farther than their usual range. While we hear the station in some other state or town, they hear us. These inversions are
more likely to happen in the summer, and unfortunately, they can last hours or even days. There's nothing we can do about them. Please just continue to check the station until WPR returns. On the bright side, people far away are getting a chance to hear the WPR we all know and
love.
WPR downloads are now free to all!
In an exciting new development, downloads of WPR programs are now available to anyone. Look through our archives or our daily program listings and wherever you see the "Download MP3" button, feel free to load the file onto your computer
or MP3 player and listen to it when it's convenient for you.
Earle Terry inducted into the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame
UW-Madison
professor of physics, Earle Terry (1869 - 1929), was inducted into the WBA Hall of Fame for his pioneering work on wireless transmission. It was in Dr. Terry's lab that the experimental station, 9XM, got its start. That station eventually led to Wisconsin Public Radio.
