    Experts Want More Openness About Suicide

    8/27/02 -- Society used to conceal chemical dependency, spousal abuse, and drunken driving. In the past two decades, these issues have been brought into the public spotlight for scrutiny, often leading to solutions. But many experts say severe mental illness and suicide remain behind closed doors. Mike Simonson reports in part two of our series "Society's Secret", that the news media is actively keeping suicide in the closet.

    Assisted Suicide Remains Controversial

    8/28/02 -- Only one state in the U-S allows assisted suicide, a practice whose morality and legality continues to be challenged. Most recently, the U-S Attorney General suffered a court setback, which is being appealed. John Ashcroft sought to use the Controlled Substances Act to punish doctors who help terminally ill persons die. Shamane Mills reports.

    Talking, Medication Keys to Prevention

    8/29/02 -- The U-S Surgeon General says suicide is a national health crisis. We finish our series on suicide with a look at prevention. New drugs are available to help people with mental problems. But perhaps the most effective way to stop people from killing themselves is deceptively simple...talking openly about it. But diseases like bi-polar disorder and depression are highly stigmatized. And getting someone into treatment is no guarantee that he or she won't eventually commit suicide anyway. Patty Murray reports.
