WISCONSIN SIKHS RESPOND TO SHOOTINGS WPR News - Wisconsin Sikhs Respond to Shootings
Monday August 06, 2012 by Chuck Quirmbach

The Sikh community in Wisconsin is responding to Sunday's shootings with sadness, tributes, and a wish for education.

A half-dozen worshippers died when gunman Wade Michael Page invaded a Sikh temple in Oak Creek. The names, ages and genders of the dead were read at a news conference Monday.

Amardeep is the son of the late Satwan Singh Kaleka, who was president of the Oak Creek temple. Amardeep says his father worked hard for many years in Milwaukee and was beaten during a robbery. But Amardeep says his dad loved the U.S., even flying a large American flag that embarrassed his sons.

National Sikh leaders have arrived in Wisconsin and say they here to help the local worshippers. Amardeep Singh of the Sikh coalition says if Sunday's shootings were based on race and religion, then the U.S. needs to learn more about Sikhs.
