(MILWAUKEE) Milwaukee Public Schools plans to reduce its staff size by about 400 positions next year. The budget proposal for the 2012-13 school year would cut over 230 teaching positions, as well as clerical, custodial, and food service staff.
Bob Peterson is president of the Milwaukee Teachers Education Association, "It's uncertain now how many layoffs because there will be a considerable number of retirements, we're actually hoping that there are no layoffs. But the bottom line is that over 400 positions are going to be eliminated. And last year they eliminated around 1,000 positions. And we have relatively the same number of students and we have that many less people working with kids. Which really isn't a good thing for the children of Milwaukee."
The state's biennial budget last year cut funding to MPS by almost $82 million. When Gov. Scott Walker took office, MPS teachers had already signed a contract with the district through June of 2013 and therefore are not yet subject to the collective bargaining law. However, Peterson says contracts are expiring for some of the unions that work for MPS.
