LATINO ACTIVISTS PREPARE FOR SUNDAY MARCH IN MILWAUKEE WPR News - Latino activists prepare for Sunday march in Milwaukee
Friday April 27, 2012 by Chuck Quirmbach
Tens of thousands of Latinos are expected to take part in an annual solidarity march in Milwaukee on Sunday. This week, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments over Arizona's controversial immigration law. Christine Neumann-Ortiz of the group Voces de la Frontera says she hopes this Sunday's pro-immigrant march in Milwaukee, helps tell the justices that the Arizona law isn't wanted in states like Wisconsin. Neumann-Ortiz says the marchers also hope to urge the U.S. Justice Department to end deportations of non-violent undocumented immigrants, especially when that action breaks up families. She says on the state front, there's a call to reverse the Republican-backed law that ended in-state college tuition for children of undocumented adults. Sunday's march also comes as candidates for governor are competing for the Latino vote, and President Obama is seeking re-election without having gotten through major immigration changes sought by progressive groups.
