YWCA AIMS TO FIGHT RACISM WPR News - YWCA aims to fight racism
Friday April 27, 2012 by Maureen McCollum
The YWCA is pushing to end racism through nationwide programs that took place Friday. (4/27) In Wisconsin, groups in La Crosse, Janesville, and Wausau conducted their own "Stand Against Racism" educational events. Outside the YWCA's Child Center near downtown La Crosse, young children lined up with their teachers, families, and community activists, holding hands and signs for "Stand Against Racism." YWCA Child Care Center Director Sharlene Weibel says they've been teaching the children about dignity and respect for all people, as well as celebrating diversity, "The base of what we learn is in these early years. The ages of 3-5 is when children learn the most of their ideals and their foundations. If we can teach that now, our world will be a better place as they grow." Weibel says she hopes the event helps spark more conversations about overcoming racism throughout the community, "Stand Against Racism" is an annual event and year-long program that strives to bring community members together and start conversations about how to eliminate racism.
