LATINO MARCH RAISES CONCERNS ABOUT WISCONSIN AND FEDERAL POLICIES
WPR News - Latino march raises concerns about Wisconsin and federal policies
Monday April 30, 2012 by Chuck Quirmbach
Thousands of Latinos took part in an annual march in Milwaukee Sunday, (4/29) that aimed to raise concerns about some state and federal policies. The May Day solidarity march stretched for about eight blocks, as it went from Milwaukee's largely Latino community near south side to Lake Michigan. Some of the marchers raised concerns about Wisconsin policies, including a law passed by Republicans that dropped an in-state tuition program for children of undocumented immigrants. Marla Pocelle says that harms education. Other marchers held signs that pushed for changes in federal law. Renee Espinoza-Kissell says the Obama administration still deports too many undocumented people who are non-violent, and she says that breaks up families. President Obama has promised to cut back on some deportations, but Illinois Democratic Congressman Luis Gutierrez, who spoke after the march, says he still hears complaints. It's still unclear if Latino disappointment with the president on immigration and deportation policies will make a difference in the November election.
