JUNE 5TH DATE SET FOR WESTON BUS REFERENDUM WPR News - June 5th date set for Weston bus referendum
Tuesday April 24, 2012 by Glen Moberg
(WESTON) A Marathon County judge has set a June 5 date for a referendum that would force a central Wisconsin village to reinstate public bus service. The decision is being hailed by a group of local religious leaders. The Village of Weston stopped funding public bus service after cuts in state aid in Gov. Walker's budget. Weston's decision to pull out of the Wausau Metro system had a ripple effect, also ending bus service in two other communities. The social justice group NAOMI sued the village, demanding that it put a binding referendum on the ballot to bring back the buses. On Monday, (4/23) Marathon County Judge Michael Moran chose the June 5 recall election for the referendum, instead of the November general election. Father Steven Brice of St. Anne's Catholic Church is a leader of the NAOMI referendum drive, "We are absolutely ecstatic that Judge Moran has made this call because it makes much greater the likelihood that we can still get state and federal funding." Father Brice says if the referendum had been pushed to November, it would have made it less likely that buses could be reinstated next year even if Weston voters approve the measure, "What we're talking about is direct legislation. If the people vote this in, that means it becomes an ordinance, a law, that the Village of Weston must provide the basic minimum we set of transportation in the community." Weston Village President Fred Schuster says he is waiting to hear back from the attorneys who are handling the lawsuit filed by NAOMI.
