STATE HAS PRINTED 100,000 CONCEALED CARRY PERMITS WPR News - State has printed 100,000 concealed carry permits
Monday April 23, 2012 by Shawn Johnson
(UNDATED) The state of Wisconsin has printed 100,000 concealed carry permits in the six months since the new law was enacted. Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen says his office initially planned for 125,000 permits in the first year concealed carry was law in Wisconsin. Van Hollen says the Department of Justice has been able to keep up with issuing permits despite the higher than expected demand. Speaking to reporters from the DOJ's print shop where the licenses get made, Van Hollen said the new law had proven a success so far, "There were doomsday people out there before concealed carry was passed who were predicting the gloom and doom. That when we put more guns on the streets, that when more people are able to carry concealed weapons, that we're going to have more problems. Nothing could have been further from the truth." Van Hollen said it was hard to say whether concealed carry had made Wisconsin safer, contending the law was more about constitutional rights than about public safety. Van Hollen has long been a backer of concealed carry. He says he also supports Wisconsin's recently passed "castle doctrine" law that changes the burden of proof in cases when someone shoots who they believe to be an intruder.
