MORE EARLY BLOOMS AND ARRIVALS WPR News - More early blooms and arrivals
Thursday April 19, 2012 by Chuck Quirmbach
(UNDATED) Scientists and citizen volunteers are documenting more signs of an early spring. But there are concerns about cold temperatures expected this week. It's not just migrating birds arriving early or apple trees budding. UW-Milwaukee climatologist Mark Schwartz says the leaf buds on his backyard lilacs opened on March 14th. Schwartz is co-founder of a national phenology network that looks at the influence of climate on plant and animal life. He says this week, he worries about frost or freezes harming the plants. He says any damage depends on the length and severity of the cold weather. Schwartz and the Wisconsin DNR are urging people to keep records on what's taking place. He says it's easy to do, and helps improve scientists understanding of the natural world.
