BARRETT SAYS MINING LEGISLATION WOULD BE A PRIORITY WPR News - Barrett says mining legislation would be a priority
Friday April 13, 2012 by Lucy Roberts
(SUPERIOR) Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Barrett made a stop in Superior Friday (4/13) as he campaigned through northern Wisconsin. Democrat Tom Barrett is trying to rally support for his campaign. At the Superior Democratic Party Headquarters, Barrett says he is focusing on a range of issues, from public employee union bargaining rights to education across the state to creating jobs. Barrett says he also plans on working on the iron ore mining bill that failed in the state legislature this year, "Well, what I would be doing is working with the tribe, working with local governments, working with the businesses, because we have to make sure that any legislation dealing with planning does two things. One, that is creates the jobs it's intended to create, but second, that it is respectful of the environment, and that's clearly what the two issues are. Again, Gov. Walker made no attempt at all, no serious attempt, to try to bring people together, and that would be my starting point, to see if there was a way for us to work together." Barrett says he is running for governor to bring Wisconsin back to what it once was, but the way hasn't been free of obstacles. Even before he officially announced his candidacy, the Republican Party began running commercials against him, a move Barrett says is historic, "Oh there's absolutely no doubt that they don't want me to be the general election candidate, and they've made it clear that they don't want me to be the general election candidate, both through the way they've spent money and just their comments about wanting to mess around in the Democratic primary. You almost take it as a backhanded compliment, the way that they're attacking." Barrett campaigned with former Congressman Dave Obey, who is endorsing his run for governor.
