(UNDATED) Some school districts in Wisconsin may have to lay off employees for the next school year. The legislature and Gov. Scott Walker last year gave school boards more options to balance their budgets. They also passed along historic cuts.
The Racine Unified School District says it expects to cut more than 250 teaching positions, and the Manitowoc district is discussing potentially cutting 20 teaching positions. Meanwhile, the Neenah School District may actually end up hiring, possibly five additional teachers. Miles Turner is executive director of the Wisconsin Association of School District Administrators, "There are probably some idiosyncrasies out there in districts, some of which may have increasing enrollment, some may have grants, or new programs, some may have cut even deeper into insurance savings, and therefore are hiring staff, but you have to clarify whether the hiring staff is above the level of last year or if they are just hiring people that are leaving."
Turner says he expects many more districts will have to cut positions than will hire for next year. He says there will be a clearer picture of statewide education employment numbers at the end of the month when staff have to be notified if they are not going to be renewed.
