MILWAUKEE ALDERS WANT TRANSPARENCY IN STRIP SEARCH PROBES WPR News - Milwaukee alders want transparency in strip search probes
Wednesday April 11, 2012 by Chuck Quirmbach
(MILWAUKEE) Investigations into potentially illegal strip searches by Milwaukee police may be reported to the public sooner. Investigations are underway into whether some Milwaukee police officers illegally did strip and body cavity searches of suspects while looking for drugs. The Milwaukee common council has unanimously passed a resolution urging that the police department and fire and police commission report their findings within 30 days of their investigations being completed. Milwaukee Alderwoman Milele Coggs says the public has a right to know. Coggs says the fire and police commission may already learn about the results, but that panel's meetings are not televised and are poorly attended. She says reports given to the common council are better publicized. Federal agencies say they may also investigate the strip search controversy.
