(UNDATED) The Wisconsin DNR says any hunting season for sandhill cranes is still at least four years away, despite a vote this week backing a hunt.
Voters at Spring conservation hearings went roughly 2 to 1 in favor of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress asking state lawmakers to give the DNR the authority to develop a hunting season for sandhill cranes. The advisory measure passed in 65 counties. DNR wildlife biologist Kent Van Horn says sometime next year, state lawmakers could order the DNR to work on a hunt, but he says that process wouldn't be quick.
The Madison Audubon Society says it hopes no one tries to fast track a sandhill crane hunt. Executive secretary Karen Etter Hale contends there are many bird-lovers and hunters who don't want to shoot sandhill cranes. She says this week's vote was only a small slice of the state population, and came very late in Monday (4/10) evening's meetings. Etter Hale says she hopes to mobilize more opponents.
The proposal for a sandhill crane hunt failed in Dane, Milwaukee, Lafayette and Richland counties, and tied in Eau Claire, Jefferson and Sawyer Counties.
